Our education programme and veterinary projects encourage young people to value animal welfare and recognise sentience.
Working with local schools provides an opportunity for our project teams to encourage empathy towards animals and teach children the basics of animal care and management. We engage with classes and their teachers and adapt our visits to ensure that they are relevant to the local context. The children we meet could not only be the next generation of working equid owners but can often also already have a role in their care as part of the family. As part of our wider work with communities we also encourage increased levels of school enrolment, so that children within equine-owning families will have access to formal education and support in their formative years.
By partnering with veterinary institutions, we have a unique opportunity to support the inclusion and development of curricula to enhance the equine and animal welfare elements which are often considered as more minor to companion or production animal topics. Through well-established community links, our projects can facilitate practical training – building handling and communication skills and supporting student research projects.
